Okay, you are just returning to work after the birth of your baby, and you've found what you hope will be the perfect nanny. It's hard enough to return to work without wondering about the kind of care your new baby is getting. But a nanny camera or a baby camera can help you find out if your baby is in good hands or not.

A Nanny Camera is a Good Evaluation Tool

The following story is true, but the names have been changed. It's the story of a couple we'll call John and Mary. When John and Mary had their third child, they hired a nanny to help out. They thought they had found the perfect one, and even considered her as part of the family. However, when they suspected that the baby had been allowed to cry a lot longer than she should, they installed a nanny camera. It turns out that the "perfect" nanny wasn't so perfect after all. On the tape, the nanny was seen repeatedly hitting the child's head with a fist and hitting her hands as she held on to the side of the crib. Soon the nanny was arrested and charged with child abuse.

If it feels a bit like spying, that's because it is. But how else will you be sure your baby is getting excellent care while you're at work? If you get a good nanny camera, you can monitor what the nanny is doing, even while you're at the office. Most nanny cameras are very tiny and discreet, and some are motion activated. (They start recording when motion occurs.) Others come in the form of clocks, teddy bears and other items.

Before you install a nanny camera, you should first research the legal issues. Some states don't allow it, and others only allow it if you have the nanny's consent. In most cases, a video-only recording is legal, but you can't record voices, like telephone conversations and things like that. If you decide to get a nanny cam, the store where you buy it will be able to tell you what the laws for it are in your state. But if it's legal, why not install one? It's one of the most important baby safety products you can buy, because baby safety is paramount.
