Child Safety Programs

If your child is enrolled in grade school, you probably already know about a lot of the child safety programs out there. Some are more well known than others, but most of them are good. On this page, we'll outline a few.

D.A.R.E.

This program is presented in 75% of all schools nationwide by law enforcement officials and is designed to keep kids off drugs and out of gangs. In fact, D.A.R.E. stands for Drug Abuse Resistance Education. The curriculum focuses on the following:

Providing information about drugs, alcohol and tobacco
Teaching kids how to make good decisions
Teaching kids how to stand up to peer pressure
Teaching kids options other than drug use

Another aim of D.A.R.E. is to use role playing to raise childrens' self esteem and make their own decisions instead of letting their peers have any influence over them.

Eddie Eagle GunSafe Program

Eddie Eagle is a the National Rifle Association's mascot for gun safety. Eddie goes to grade schools to teach kids from preschool age through third grade about gun safety. He outlines four rules for children if they ever see a gun:

STOP!
Don't touch!
Leave the area.
Tell an adult.

Materials include student workbooks, instructor guides, brochures, a 7-minute animated video and student reward stickers.

Others....

Who could forget Smokey Bear's mantra? "Only you can prevent forest fires." Of course he's trying to protect the forests, which is good, but he made some good points about fire safety as well.

And what about McGruff? That's one dog who cares about safety! He takes a bite out of crime, remember? Of all the child safety programs out there, this one covers the most ground, with child safety always at the forefront. These days, McGruff teaches what he always has, but he also teaches about drug prevevntion, Internet safety, child identifiation, bicycle safety, Halloween safety, abduction and more.

All of these programs offer valuable child safety tips. Chances are, your child will encounter at least one child safety program, hopefully more.
