If you have a newborn, you need to be able to tell when she's sick. Being prepared is the best baby safety measure you can take. It will also pay off to do plenty of research into toddler safety and general child safety also.

Infant Safety at Home

Newborns are especially hard to deal with when they are sick because they cannot tell you what is hurting them, but they are at the same time more vulnerable when they are so tiny which makes infant safety that much more important. A new parent can become especially distressed when trying to soothe a sick infant. There are many infant safety devices that are made to ease such a burden and help the caregiver to better determine what might be bothering the child. Sometimes it is as simple and easy to get rid of as gas, while other ailments need medical attention.

We believe that knowledge is your best bet to ensure infant safety. All caregivers and parents should have a few first aid books that have been specifically written about babies, children and infant safety. They should provide you with information from minor to serious injuries. See that they are detailed, yet can be used as a clear, quick reference. There should always be a well- maintained first aid kit at home, in the car, and in your bag when you travel.

Another one of our favorite infant safety products is the "care kit". These are for use both at home and or travel. It's an all-in-one zippered carrying case that has the following securely packed inside;

Thermometer
Medicine syringe
Medicine spoon
Nasal aspirator
Nail clipper

It can be a very handy to keep a care kit with these items in the nursery and probably even more appreciated when something unexpected happens while traveling. The calmest parents and caregivers are usually the most prepared. When you are prepared for any eventuality--it's easier to take it all in stride.

Whenever a child gets sick, we usually take its temperature right away. For many of us it is a daunting task because infants are notoriously squirmy. It can be difficult to get a oral or rectal reading without the fear of actually hurting them. One of our favorite infant safety products are ear thermometers. They are much easier to use and need only be placed lightly in the baby's ear instead of the traditional and intrusive way. Both infants and parents seem to react better to these new thermometers.

An added bonus to many of these kits is that they come with booklets full of infant safety tips, some that you may not have considered before - but one infant safety tip can end up saving a life!
