Prenatal Testing
Pregnancy is both and exciting as well as a stressful time. We cannot help but to worry about all aspects of our baby's prenatal safety. It is not only new mothers that seems to think every little thing must be something wrong. But, prenatal testing is not only done to make sure that the baby is healthy, there are many tests that will be done before the birth and some of it is only to track the development or, of course, what sex it will be!
The importance of prenatal testing
There are many things that can go wrong with a pregnancy, although, luckily, many of those things are quite rare. The objective of prenatal testing during gestation is to pick up on those things that might be reversed or treated while the baby is still in utero. It is also important to recognize that not everything can be solved or treated with proper prenatal care, but we should be doing everything we can to control the things that can be treated and probably prepare for the things that cannot be. Many tests are essentially only screenings to look at the chance the baby has of having or developing certain problems.
Test done during pregnancy are not only done to gauge prenatal development, but also to monitor the health of the mother. There are a few conditions that are common in pregnant women, but that are treatable. Prenatal tests done for the mother are done to find out first and foremost if she has any diseases that could be spread to the baby, such as sexually transmitted diseases. It is also fairly common for some women to develop diabetes during pregnancy, called gestational diabetes. This is a condition that can be treated, but if it is not can cause major problems for the expectant mother.
There are also a number of tests that are optional for you to have done. Some parents do not wish to find out all that science can offer them about their unborn child and they often have the right to choose for themselves whether or not it is in their best interest. That is why it is imperative that every parent-to-be makes educated decisions in their prenatal care.
