Prenatal Vitamins
The best care you can give a child while it is still in the womb is preventative care and continual follow-ups with your doctor. Your doctor has probably advised you to start taking prenatal vitamins to ensure that your body is getting all the nutrition it needs during the pregnancy. Many doctors will also suggest that a women start with the prenatal care of her child even before she becomes pregnant and this includes taking good prenatal vitamins.
Prenatal vitamins are a good preventative measure
Pregnancy is very taxing on a woman's body. The child growing inside demands a lot of nutrition and care. If the mother is not taking in enough nutrients while she is pregnant, the body will actually leech what it needs out of her body, that is why it is essential to add to your daily intake of food and carefully watch what you are eating to make sure that both you and the baby are getting the proper nutrition. And one way to ensure prenatal safety in regards to nutrition is with prenatal vitamins. But, as any doctor will also tell you, they are not meant to be the sole source of vitamins and minerals, they are only taken to make sure that nothing is lacking.
Another reason to take vitamins during pregnancy is because many of them contain preventative ingredients such as floate and iron. Years of prenatal testing has shown that folate does reduce the risks of birth defects. It can be found in some food, but most prenatal pills will contain a certain amount of it. It should be taken before and especially in the first few weeks of pregnancy to be most effective. In addition to the pills, these foods contain folate:
- many cereals are enriched with folic acid
- dried beans
- leafy vegetables that are dark green in color
- many fruits
- some orange juices are also have added folic acid
